Footwear: Challenges expected for 2023

Industry representatives have pointed out some of the factors that can impact footwear manufacturing.

Luís Onofre, President of the Portuguese Footwear, Components, Leather Goods Manufacturers' Association (APICCAPS), outlined some of the challenges that may arise in 2023. He listed cost increases, economic contraction, wage growth surpassing competition, and rising interest rates.

These challenges come at a time when the Portuguese footwear industry is experiencing one of its best periods, with exports reaching € 2.3 billion in 2022 across the footwear, leather goods and components sectors.

According to the leader, uncertainty will be further exacerbated by other circumstances such as new competitors, a lack of skilled workforce, disruption in global supply chains, and more, as reported by APICCAPS.
