Editorial. The true challenge of modernization

The recent agreement between the Association of Latin American Footwear Chambers (ACCAL) and the Italian Association of Manufacturers of Footwear, Leather Goods and Tanning Machinery (ASSOMAC) represents an unquestionable milestone for the regional industry. Access to cutting-edge technology provides a strategic opportunity to modernize processes, increase productivity and compete more effectively in international markets.

However, the incorporation of state-of-the-art equipment alone does not guarantee a successful industrial transformation. While technology is the vehicle, real momentum depends on three fundamental pillars that companies in the region must strengthen.

First, financial capacity. Technology adoption requires sustainable investment schemes and access to appropriate financing to absorb capital costs without compromising operating liquidity. Second, human talent. Advanced automation serves little purpose without simultaneous investment in the education and training of the personnel responsible for operating, maintaining and optimizing it. Finally, management vision. Leading this qualitative leap requires clear strategic direction from company executives to integrate new tools into an agile business model adapted to current challenges.

The agreement with ASSOMAC sets a highly positive course for Latin America. The real challenge -and the real opportunity- will be to approach this process from a comprehensive perspective in which technology, capital and human resources advance at the same pace.
