As of August 6, a 50% tariff on Brazilian footwear entering the U.S. market has come into effect. Multiple complaints and consequences that such a measure will cause in the sector were immediately triggered, considering that the United States is the primary destination for Brazilian footwear exports. ABICALÇADOS expressed its concern over Donald Trump’s decision and called for the support of the Brazilian government to navigate this situation, in which political considerations overlap with trade issues.
According to the association, this measure comes at a time of gradual recovery in exports to the U.S., which reached 5.8 million pairs in the first half of the year, valued at US$ 111.8 million. Compared to the same period in 2024, this represents a 13.5% increase in volume and a 7.2% increase in revenue.
ABICALÇADOS questioned the decision, recalling the favorable trade balance for the U.S. in bilateral exchanges.
