Footwear sector sees reduction in workforce
A total of 7.6 thousand jobs were lost in the period up to November 2023, bringing the total workforce in the sector to 288.6 thousand workers. According to ABICALÇADOS figures, the recorded decline is 6.9% year-on-year.
Employment is being affected by a 6% volume retraction nationwide and a 14% decline in the global market, as stated by Haroldo Ferreira, executive president of the entity. Furthermore, Ferreira asserted that international e-commerce platforms pose unfair competition for the sector.
Rio Grande do Sul, the state that employs the most in the industry, had a drop of 5.6%; followed by Ceará, with -6.2% and Bahia, with a decrease of 3.5%.
