On January 20th, the mayor of Chivilcoy, Guillermo Britos, together with officials from his cabinet, union representatives and the head of the company BICONTINENTAR Footwear Technologies SA, Gustavo Félix Fernández, announced the reopening, through the acquisition of the factory in calzados PERCHET, a subsidiary of the Brazilian PAQUETÁ in Argentina, which was closed in 2018.
The industrial site, specialized in the manufacture of sports shoes, had 1,200 employees in 2017 and a monthly production of 55,000 pairs of shoes, mostly from the ADIDAS brand.
According to the company representative, operations will begin in April 2021, with 150 workers in the first stage, where Chivilcoy residents, who previously worked in the company, will be prioritized.
"The idea is that by the end of 2021 we will have between 300 or 400 workers and by the end of 2022 about 600 workers," said Fernández.
The executive also added that various negotiations are underway with many footwear brands to work under license, a façon or another system. "The task is not easy because the plant was idle for a long time and we have to solve some difficulties to start it up," he explained.
For its part, the mayor of Chivilcoy, Guillermo Britos said the reopening "is one of the best news of recent times" and asked for priority to residents of Chivilcoy who are unemployed right now, primarily to former PAQUETÁ workers to join the company.
"We wish all success to this venture, even taking into account the difficult conditions facing the country," said the official.
For the secretary general of UTICRA Chivilcoy, the trade organization that brings together workers, Juan Marcelo Lopez, he said that "we must give value to this, especially in the context that we are going through. The establishment of the company in our region, generating sources of work is very important and even more so after the hard blow that its closure meant at the time ”.
