66.7% drop in footwear sales in May

It is compared to the same month last year, as a result of the quarantine.

In the absence of sales, numerous shoe stores opted for the final closure.

According to the latest report of CAME, the Argentine Confederation of Medium-sized Enterprise, through a survey carried out based on 1,100 shops of different items throughout the country, average general sales in May 2020 fell 50.8% in quantities, compared to the same month of 2019.

The survey includes the modality of commercial premises and online sales.

All the items consulted ended in decline in the face of the lower general consumption that causes a decrease in income, the reduced circulation of people, and the uncertainty generated by the Covid-19 pandemic.

FOOTWEAR and LEATHER GOODS are among the most affected sectors (-66.7%), due to the order of priorities established by family consumption, where the purchase of food, medicine and health products has been privileged.

The FOOTWEAR commercial circuit is made up of independent shoe stores and chains, which maintain many restrictions due to the characteristics of the purchase that require to try on, or direct consumer contact with the products.

This reason has caused that many shops in the sector have closed their doors, and the situation is aggravated in shopping malls and shopping centers that are not yet enabled.

For this reason, beyond the figures provided by CAME, in other sources of retail trade in the sector, it is estimated that the drop in Buenos Aires and suburbs may have exceeded 75%.

Following is the list of retail sales -May 2020-, in its interannual percentage variation in quantities, by sector.
