SAPICA: the export potential of Mexico’s footwear industry

The international situation opens an encouraging panorama for the sector in the foreign market.

An intense commercial activity was recorded during the three days of the fair.

Between March 8th, 9th and 10th, the 86th edition of SAPICA was held at the Poliforum León fairgrounds in the State of Guanajuato. This version of the Mexican footwear exhibition was developed under the slogan #SteppingIntoTheFuture, which invited to enter a new era and restructure businesses.

Throughout the fair, the organizers implemented the Health, Safety and Prevention Protocol, with the aim of adapting to the health requirements in the still current context of the pandemic.

The footwear offer was made up of more than 500 brands and factories from Mexico, which received more than 2,500 buyers from all over the country and abroad. The predominant lines were casual, fast fashion, children, cowboy boots and sports footwear. There was also a space dedicated to leather goods and the presence of Companies in Development.

Good prospects for 2022

In the midst of the post-pandemic recovery process, the Mexican industry has benefited from the international situation that prevents the normal supply of Asian footwear to the United States -its largest market-, for which its exports have reached a significant increase. In 2021, more than 29 million pairs were exported, meaning 55.3% more than in 2020, for a value of more than US$ 630 million.

In this framework, the number of foreign buyers in SAPICA increased by 48% compared to the previous edition of August 2021. These represented 148 companies, mostly from the United States, followed by Guatemala, El Salvador, Peru, Colombia, Honduras and Canada, among others.

According to estimates by local industrialists, footwear exports to the United States should grow by 20% in 2022, compared to 2021.

Internal market

SAPICA also received 12% more national buyers than in the last edition, on which CICEG -Chamber of Footwear of Guanajuato- carries out strong awareness actions to promote the purchase of products made in Mexico, discourage unfair imports and commercial informality.

Events on knowledge and fashion

Within the complementary activities to the exhibition, the Knowledge Pavilion offered four conferences on: Metaverses, Cryptos and NFTs; the future of fashion business; the new rules of retail; E-commerce and the Internet revolution.

Regarding fashion, different catwalks were held, where brands such as SALAMANDRA, SABATTER, EFE and FABIÁN ARENAS showed their proposals for the next season.

The set of presentations, registered a call of more than a thousand people.

Next edition Spring-Summer 2023

Based on the positive results obtained in the March 2022 edition, the organizers of SAPICA -the Chamber of Footwear of Guanajuato CICEG-, is already developing the next one of August 2022, where they aspire to convene more exhibitors and visitors, within a process of recovery of the domestic market, and a strong internationalization of the fair in order to continue growing in footwear exports.
